flash twrp and root redmi 3 with locked bootloader

hello miui users,

there have been cases of bootloader not unlocking officially, due to which people arent able to install the much loved twrp recovery and root their phone,
i'm gonna show a simple way to flash twrp and then root the phone even when the bootloader is locked.

so first things first.
lets look at the list of downloads

• fastboot rom for the redmi 3 [download link here]
• android image kitchen [ android.image.kitchen.v2.4-win32.zip (2.43 mb, downloads: 141) ]
• notepad ++ [ npp.6.8.7.installer.exe.zip (3.83 mb, downloads: 80) ]
• miflash [ miflash.zip (26.52 mb, downloads: 91) ]
• twrp for redmi 3 [ twrp-3.0.2-0-ido.img.zip (12.92 mb, downloads: 150) ]

now lets go thru the sequence:

• edit boot.img
• replace boot.img and recovery.img
• reboot phone to download mode
• flash rom
• reboot to twrp recovery
• root system
• reboot

so lets get started with modifying the boot.img

• so first extract the fastboot rom to a known location
• extract the android image kitchen to a known location
• copy the boot.img from the rom \images folder to the android image kitchen folder
  
• now drag the boot.img over the unpackimg.bat
• this should now give you the following screen
  
  and 2 folders<ul>
  <li>ramdisk
• split_image

</li>[*]now we need to go inside the "ramdisk" folder
[*]we will edit the files marked with the red box using notepad ++
[*]we open the "fstab.qcom" and remove the ", verify" as shown in the screenshot

[*]save the file and exit notepad++[*]now open the default.prop file in notepad++[*]change the following lines
ro.adb.secure=1
ro.debuggable=0
persist.sys.usb.config=mtp
ro.secureboot.devicelock=1



to

ro.adb.secure=0
ro.debuggable=1
persist.sys.usb.config=adb
ro.secureboot.devicelock=0

[*]now save the file and exit notepad++[*]now head back to the android image kitchen folder and run the "repackimg.bat" file to get the modified boot.img




[*]now we replace the recovery.img and boot.img in the fastboot rom folder with the new boot image and the twrp image
(note: the twrp.img should be renamed to recovery.img and the image-new.img should be renamed to boot.img)[*]turn off the device. press the volume up(+) key and the power button at the same time to enter download mode (an advaced mode for flashing rom). then connect the device to the windows pc/laptop via a micro usb cable
[*]now your phone will be in download mode

[*]it should show as qualcomm hsusb-qloader 9008[*]now use mi flash using the flash_all option to flash the rom you modified.[*]once the flashing process is completed.[*]reboot your phone by force to twrp recovery by keeping the volume down + power buttons pressed.[*]swipe to enable modifications[*]now you have permanently installed, now select reboot > system[*]this should ask for you to install supersu binary. swipe to install[*]once your phone is rebooted. install supersu from playstore and you are done!
